Vitreous enamel is the harmonious fusion of a thin layer of glass upon metal. A coloured glassy powder is spread across a metal surface which is then heated to extreme temperatures in a kiln to form the delicate fusion of the two materials. The glass powder melts together to form a smooth, sleek covering which is built up in layers to achieve a rich colour and impermeable covering over the metal.

Yes, to create a truly weatherproof sign, we enamel both the front and the back of the sign so that the metal is fully coated. This prevents corroding.
The process of making an enamel sign is a time honoured tradition passed down one generation to the next by skilled artisans. Each sign begins life as a metal plate which is then cut and molded into shape. Powdered glass is then mixed with water and this mixture is sprayed onto the surface of the metal and left to dry. Once ready to fire, the sign is placed into a kiln which has been heated to temperatures up to 820ºC. This causes the powdered glass to melt and fuse onto the metal sign forming a smooth, hard glass coating. This layer is grey and used as a base layer upon which additional layers of coloured enamel are added and fired individually. This method of layering the enamel produces a rich colour and glossy finish.

SHAPES, SIZES & STYLES
When deciding upon the style of sign to choose, contrast is key. If you live in a red brick home then consider a white, black or blue sign so that it stands out against the vivid background. Alternatively, if you live in a white house a green, blue, black or red sign will add the eye catching accent you are looking for. Our Arrowhead collection of dark green signs is designed to combine perfectly with wood cabins and rural architecture while the Metropolitan blue signs are our most versatile, fitting with most house styles.
The size of your sign depends on where you want to place your sign in your home. If you are designing an outdoor sign that needs to be visible from a distance, then a larger format is advisable. An indoor sign can be smaller since it will be viewed close up and the details can be appreciated so a sign that measures between 3-10 inches is a good guide. For outdoor signs, begin with a sign that measures 2 inches wide. Every 3 feet you step away from the sign, increase the sign size by 1 inch.

Yes we do! Our colour swatches are small enamelled discs which offer you a true to life representation of how your chosen colour will look. As colours show differently on screens, this is the most accurate way to show our colours. Our swatches can be purchased for a small fee from the Colour Swatches page.
The smallest size we can produce any typeface is 10mm due to the fact that each letter is hand stencilled and details need to be maintained.
Each hole measures 4mm in diameter.

PLACING AN ORDER & ORDER CONFIRMATION
An automated response to your order will be sent shortly after an order is placed however we also send manual order confirmations 1 business day after payment is cleared alerting you that your order is being processed and providing you with an estimated delivery time.
All custom designed products (not stocked products) will have a proof attached to the order confirmation email. If you are happy with the proof, then you can ignore the email however, if you require additional edits to be made then please let us know as soon as possible in order to reduce the chance of delays. Our team of graphic designers will work with you to produce a mock up that fits your needs and if a desired style cannot be reached, then we will refund your money. It is worth noting that all proofs are in black and white but the real sign will show your chosen colour.
TAXES AND CUSTOMS
Yes, all taxes are included in the final price of purchase. If however, your order exceeds local tax thresholds and you get charged, please contact us within 8 days via email or our contact form and attach a copy of your tax receipt.
There should be no reason why your order should experience delays when passing through customs. We specifically detail every requirement from package contents to weight on the outside of the order so that there should be no hiccups. However, as customs procedures vary from country to country we can’t promise that your order will not experience any custom delays.

All delivery time estimates can be found on the Delivery and Returns page. However, we make our estimates based on both production time and shipping time and these both depend on third parties. During high season such as the lead up to Christmas, we experience a higher number of orders and therefore there may be a longer production time. The shipping time depends on your location and the efficiency of your local postal service. So, the estimated times we provide are calculated to provide you a rough guide but are no means set in stone. Express shipping is available for those wanting their deliveries in a rush.

The desired production time and delivery method must be chosen when placing the order and cannot be changed later.
Your order will arrive in a rigid cardboard sleeve packaged with simple mounting instructions and materials. Normally your local postal service will be able to post it through your door or place it in your mailbox however if you choose a courier then you will be required to be at home to receive the sign.
Orders sent by standard delivery will be shipped by the local postal service and therefore will not be trackable. However if you choose courier shipping, you will receive a tracking number the moment your delivery is shipped.
If you placed an order and it hasn’t arrived, be sure to first check that the correct address details were placed on the order form. Sometimes it is common for local postal services to experience delays, especially when the order is crossing international borders, however if you have not received your order more than 6 weeks after the expected time of delivery, please reach out to us via the Contact Us form. If an order was unable to be delivered successfully, these orders will be returned to us and we will be in touch to arrange alternative delivery methods.
If you choose a sign, that sign has an allocated character limit calculated based on the dimensions of the sign. As fonts have a minimum size only so many letters can fit on a sign. If your chosen sign is unable to contain your message, consider choosing a larger sign to allow your design to fit.
Yes, on our Special Orders page you will find a form allowing for specific customisation options. Send us your specifications and we will work collaboratively with you to make your design a reality. If you later decide that your sign is not for you, we will happily refund your money.
Of course. Our library of icons can be seen on the Special Orders page as well as on the Style Guide page.If you want to include an icon on your sign, this can be done via the Special Orders order form. If you require a logo, then please upload your artwork to the form. Please be as specific as possible about the requirements for positioning and the size of the images you want added. We can enamel in 31 colours.
No. We currently do not produce double sided signs however we can offer assembly of two signs back to back. Please contact us via the contact form form for more details.
If you desire to order a series of signs in the same colour, we recommend that you do so in the same order so that they all receive the same batch of enamel coating. This ensures the closest colour match possible.
No, once a sign has been enamelled it is not possible to change the design without destroying the sign. The best option is to replace the sign with a new one or combine it with an accompanying sign if possible.
BULK ORDERS AND DISCOUNTS

Back in history, all enamel signs were mass produced. Today they are more an artisan craft however, it is still possible to place a bulk order for your signage options. Simply tell us about your design and the quantities that you need and we will work with you to produce them in the most efficient way possible.
MOUNTING YOUR SIGN
We only ship washers with address plaques. If you ordered a house number or a nameplate then your sign does not require washers for mounting.
1. Please use the enclosed mounting materials.
2. Mark the exact position on the wall where you want the sign to be placed.
3. Drill the holes (use a 5 mm concrete drill).
4. Place the blue plugs in the holes.
5. To protect the surface of the sign, put one black washer on each screw.
6. Use the solid brass screws included to mount the sign.
TIP: Position the sign exactly in its place before tightening the screws.
WARNING: Avoid tightening the screw using force as this can cause the enamel to crack.
1. Please use the enclosed mounting materials.
2. Place your sign on the door. Using a pencil, mark where the drill holes will go and then remove the sign.
3. Drill the holes (use a 2 mm wood/metal drill).
4. Use the short brass screws to mount the sign- please do not use washers on a wooden surface.
TIP: Wait until you have the sign in the correct position before fully tightening the screws.
WARNING: To avoid enamel cracking, do not tighten the screws with force.
Over time, the screws will age and a natural patina will form on the surface. However it is possible to speed up the process using ammonia.
1. Using a gentle household soap or a rubbing alcohol, clean the surface of the screw.
2. In a glass, place a few drops of ammonia and then add the screws. Cover the top of the glass and leave the screws to soak.
3. After 10-15mins a discoloration will occur and the screws will be ready to clean and use. The process can be repeated for further results.
CARING FOR YOUR SIGN
Enamel signs are very long lasting and show little evidence of wear and tear. That said, keep it looking fresh with a quick wipe down using a spritz of window cleaner on a paper towel. Never use harsh chemicals or sanding materials on the sign.
Yes, if your sign has been vandalised using graffiti, simply wipe the paint with acetone to remove it from the sign. As acetone is a hazardous flammable chemical, it is recommended to do this outside.
MAKING A CLAIM & RETURNS
In the event that you are unsatisfied with your sign, our 60 days money back guarantee allows you to return the sign to us in exchange for a full refund. We ask no questions and offer no ‘if’s or ‘but’s, it is strictly if you are not satisfied with the final outcome we will refund you the sign allowing that the sign is returned to us in its original condition. We reserve the right to decline the refund if the sign is not returned in a good condition, however if the sign arrived faulty, this is a separate issue. The refund will be issued, minus shipping costs, to the customer within 8 days of the receipt of the returned sign.
Our lifetime warranty covers all of our signs, except those with white edges, for the lifetime of the customer. If during this time the sign becomes faulty, chipped or shows signs of tarnish caused by faulty manufacturing, please reach out to us via the contact form page and we will issue you with a replacement, free of charge. Sometimes we will require you to return the original sign to us but in other cases a photo will be sufficient evidence. All shipping costs will be covered if we do require postage of a sign.
If you find that upon arrival your sign is faulty, we will offer you a free replacement providing that you let us know within 30 days of receiving the sign. It may be required to send the sign back to us for inspection and in other cases a photo will be sufficient. All shipping costs to us will be covered.
As each letter is hand stencilled, the fine lines and details present on the designs are not as accurate as a computerised version. Due to the handmade nature of the designs, there will be very minor differences between the digital proof and the enamel sign. However if you are unhappy with your design, please get in touch with us and we will discuss how to replace or refund your order.
As our signs are hand made using traditional enamel techniques, our craftsmen use powdered enamel which is prepared in batches using natural materials. This results in the chance that minor variations of colour could occur between the batches. Also the environmental conditions at the time of firing the sign in the kiln will impact the final result in a subtle way. If you want two signs to appear more or less exactly the same, please order them both together so that we can produce them in the same batch.
This is a result of overheating in the firing process inside the kiln and this can leave small parts of the sign’s edges or back without a full coating of enamel. While this poses no technical problem nor will it cause any further damage to the sign, we are happy to replace it if you are not 100% happy with it.
